We like to talk about the benefit of mobile apps around here but we have to be honest as well. Not every company or business will actually benefit from one. In fact, for some, they might be a great big waste of money.
So, if you are on the fence about getting an app, here are some reasons that you might be best saving your money.
1) Your Customers Rarely Interact With You
Apps are great for keeping in touch with customers and making sure that they can easily interact with you. But what if your customers rarely need to interact with you.
If your customer only reaches out once a year or once every few years, an app might not be the best choice. Let’s say, for example, you are a local house painter. Most people are not going to go to the trouble of downloading an app for a service that they might only need once every two to three years.
Apps are best suited for companies who’s clients interact with them at least on a semi monthly basis.
2) You Do Not Require Access To A Phone
The reason that a lot of apps are so useful is that they allow for the use of other phone features such as address books, cameras, fingerprint scanners, etc.
If your business does not need access to these things, you might be best suited just having a simple “mobile friendly” website.
3) You Do Not Have The Money
Apps are expensive, requiring both high development costs and high maintenance fees. Your app will likely need to be updated frequently so it is likely not a do it once and be done thing.
Developing an app is often much more expensive than developing a similar website. This is especially true if you do some of the website work yourself.
4) There Is No Benefit To The User
Why should a user download your app? Is there a killer reason that they just must have it?
Users are pushing back against needless apps, especially those that require permission to access their phone features and data. If there is no good reason for them to download that app, they probably will not do it.
Do not create an app just for vanity. Make sure that it is of real value to the user or you are just wasting money.
5) You Have No Way To Monetize It
An app should be used for one thing and one thing only, to make money. If you do not have a way to make money from your app, you should not make it.
You should be using your app so that customers can place orders, so that they can schedule with you or so that you can make advertising revenue. If you can’t do any of that, yo uare just wasting money.
As you can see, the need for an app is not so cut and dry. To make things worse, no app developer is going to tell you that you are wasting money. Sit down and think about whether you really need that app before you make the plunge.
